Book Review: A Minute To Death by Ganga Bharani

This book is action-packed with lots of mystery!

The Blurb:

Murder most foul or an open-and-shut case of routine suicide?

Young, vivacious and an aspiring writer, Riya wants nothing more from her longtime crush/boyfriend than to let her in on one of his exciting investigations. After all, what better source material for a book than a real life tragedy?

No-nonsense veteran cop, Rohan picks a case of probable suicide to satisfy Riya’s needs. Little does he know that there is more to this case than meets the eye.

What made the victim hang herself at the break of dawn? What is the secret that her group of friends is hiding? Will Riya be able to salvage a workable plot for her upcoming novel out of this case of seemingly simple suicide?

They got up and as they were walking to the door, she asked ‘Won’t anyone question why I am here always and why I accompany you to the cases?’

‘Who can question me? You know we are in a country where policemen and politicians can do whatever they want. I am not doing something very wrong. I am just helping a budding writer who can earn a good name for the country. So it’s ok.’ He said, caressing his fingers in her hair.

‘Don’t mess up my hair.’ She frowned. She picked the sunglasses that were hanging on the first button of his shirt and slid it over his nose. He was confused why she did that. She immediately looked at the sunglasses and adjusted her hair.

‘Idiot, this is my 3k sunglasses not your dressing table.’ He said removing the glasses instantaneously.

‘Shut up. My dressing table had cost my dad 15k.’ she snatched it from him and looked at it to adjust the hair even more.

’15k for a dressing table? Now, I understand why guys hate to get married.’ He said sarcastically prolonging the stay on love in his voice.

What I liked?

Ganga Bharani has masterfully worked on the plot, background and characters. Every chapter ends with a suspense. The racy narration and logical dialogues will keep you hooked till the end. I especially liked the twist brought with Febbon’s anonymity.

Why should one read this book?

It’s rare to read a good thriller from an Indian contemporary writer. Ganga Bharani comes up with an exceptional skills of telling a story keeping mystery, suspense, thriller and romance balanced. This book is sure to give you goosebumps while reading. Quite worth the book price.

Sarav’s Desk…

First of all, a very big congratulations to Ganga Bharani for masterfully plotting the story, background and characters. You deserve every bit of applause you got so far, and the ones you get for this book in the future.

How often we read a grand introduction to the female lead character of the story like Aishwarya Rai got in Dhoom 2, except for the bike and the dialogue that followed. Had I not known that Riya is a writer by the end of first chapter, I would have gone mad dreaming about this Ms. Beautiful. Rohan, too, made a mark, in the first chapter, when he carefully noted each and every detail in Avanthika, an adamant young pretty girl’s suicide. When I expected the next few chapters to revolve around murder, investigations, forensic reports, and other stuffs, I was happy to read something new. A combination of investigation and a blossoming relationship, between the two, mostly those teasing lines, conveyed the beauty of their relationship. To be true, I was laughing all the time reading the conversation between the two – be it the first kiss or the dialogues outside her college.

The story had its own twists and turns, I enjoyed travelling along with them, without getting confused whether this book is a crime thriller or a romantic thriller like Rohan did. When I read about Reema’s suicide, much similar to Avanthikas, I started connecting the dots to find out the dark secrets behind the suicide, and what struck me was something I could never imagined of. Still I enjoyed reading the last chapters, such was the talent of the author. Hats off to her!

It was a racy read. I took two hours and fifteen minutes to complete the book. If you are a lover of racy reads, then read this book to know the secret behind their deaths, which the author and we reviewers know. In GB’s style – “Reviewers, Author and the Readers”!

What I liked?

I liked reading this book. To be precise, the conversations between Rohan and Riya. Having interviewed them personally, I expected them to do better, and they did justice to it.

The Plot, The Characters, The Execution, Masterfully done!

What I disliked?

There were places author highlighted Riya’s intelligence, though I liked initially, but when it crossed the minimal point, I felt really bad for Rohan. Maybe, the author should have maintained the equality between the two lead characters.

Why should one read this book?

Because this book is bag of emotions. It will make you fall in love with Riya, laugh reading the conversations between the two, bite nails (if it’s your habit) when you read the suspense filled chapters, hate the author for writing a chapter, and finally become a fan of the author for plotting a wonderful read!
